Omar and Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV) were named as Democratic co-chairs following the retirement of Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Barbara Lee (D-CA). With Reps. Dave Joyce (R-OH) and Brian Mast (R-FL) continuing as Republican co-chairs, the caucus faces the challenge of advancing cannabis reform under a political climate dominated by Republican control of the House, Senate, and White House.
A New Era of Cannabis Advocacy
The departure of Blumenauer and Lee marks the end of an era for two of the most vocal and consistent advocates for cannabis reform. “We represent states where adult-use legalization has been a success, so we bring a unique voice to the issue,” Omar said. Her call for increased volume reflects a shift in strategy, aiming to make cannabis reform more prominent on the legislative agenda.

The path to cannabis reform in the 119th Congress is fraught with hurdles.
