Major Drug Squad Uncovers $26 Million Cannabis Operation in Victoria

In a significant crackdown on illegal drug cultivation, Victoria’s Major Drug Squad (MDS) has seized one of the largest cannabis crops in recent history, uncovering over 6,500 plants in a rural area of Victoria. This operation highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat drug-related crime in the region.

A Coordinated Operation Leads to Major Seizure

On Tuesday, October 22, MDS detectives, alongside the Morwell Divisional Response Unit and local uniform officers, executed a search warrant at a property located on Koonwarra Inverloch Road in Leongatha South. The operation commenced around 7:45 AM and quickly revealed a sophisticated hydroponic setup within several commercial-sized greenhouses.

  • Scale of the Operation: The seized plants ranged from seedlings to mature specimens, with a total weight of approximately 1.7 tonnes.
  • Estimated Value: Authorities estimate that the entire crop, consisting of 6,525 plants, has a street value exceeding $26 million.

Arrests Made in Connection with the Operation

During the raid, five individuals were arrested, including four men and one woman, all of whom are Vietnamese nationals. The ages of those arrested range from 25 to 54 years old. They have been charged with cultivating and trafficking a commercial quantity of cannabis.

  • Court Appearance: The accused are scheduled to appear in Latrobe Valley Magistrates’ Court on March 7, 2025, where they will face the charges stemming from this significant bust.
