In a significant operation, Victoria Police have seized and destroyed an illegal cannabis crop valued at over $26 million in Leongatha South, a town in regional Victoria. This operation, conducted by the Major Drug Squad, has been described as one of the largest cannabis hauls in recent times.
Major Drug Operation Unveils Sophisticated Setup
On Tuesday, police uncovered more than 6,000 cannabis plants in a well-organized hydroponic setup within a warehouse. The operation involved extensive efforts from law enforcement, taking three days to dismantle and remove the plants.
- Arrests Made: Four men and one woman were arrested at the scene, all of whom have been charged with cultivating and trafficking a commercial quantity of cannabis.
- Scale of the Operation: Detective Acting Inspector Leemara Fairgrieve noted, “It is one of the bigger ones we have seen,” highlighting the scale and complexity of the operation.
The plants seized ranged from seedlings to mature specimens, with a total weight of approximately 1.7 tonnes. The meticulous organization of the setup included commercial-sized hot houses, water systems, and electrical installations.
Clean-Up and Environmental Concerns
The cleanup process involved more than 15 police officers and required the assistance of fire authorities due to the hazardous smoke produced when the cannabis was burned. The plants were incinerated on-site, with police emphasizing the need for safety during the disposal process.
- Hazardous Smoke: The smoke from the burning plants was considered hazardous, necessitating the involvement of fire authorities to manage the situation effectively.
Detective Fairgrieve remarked on the extensive nature of the operation, stating, “There were plants everywhere,” and described the setup as “very well coordinated and organized.”
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The five individuals arrested are Vietnamese nationals, and their visa statuses are currently under review. Authorities are collaborating with the Australian Border Force to assess their immigration status, with one individual potentially having an expired visa.
- Court Appearance: The arrested individuals have been remanded to appear in Latrobe Magistrates’ Court in March, where they will face charges related to the cultivation and trafficking of cannabis.
As the investigation continues, police are urging the public to come forward with any information that could assist in their inquiries. This operation underscores the ongoing efforts of Victoria Police to combat illegal drug cultivation and trafficking in the region.
