Morocco, known for its rich history and diverse culture, is now setting its sights on the cannabis sector as a major source of economic development. The country has unveiled an ambitious project to transform the cannabis industry, with plans to construct processing plants in the provinces of Chefchaouen, Taounate, and Al-Hoceima. These regions have a historical association with cannabis production. The goal is to produce cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive substance used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.
Subheading 1: Modern Cannabis Processing Facilities
The new facilities, each spanning 600 square meters, will be equipped with modern infrastructure to manage the entire production process. From receiving raw materials to storing finished products, these plants will handle every step. The focus is on producing high-quality CBD, which has gained popularity for its potential health benefits.
Subheading 2: Environmental Responsibility and Economic Impact
Morocco’s Northern Regions Development Agency (ADRN) is funding the project, allocating a budget of 1,702,000 dirhams (approximately €160,000) for the first plant in Al-Hoceima. The tender for designing and constructing these facilities is already underway. The project aligns with Morocco’s broader strategy to regulate and develop the cannabis industry following the legalization of cannabis for medical and industrial purposes in 2021.
Subheading 3: A Key Player in the European Cannabis Market
Morocco aims to become a significant player in the European cannabis market, estimated to be worth between $420 million and $630 million annually. By emphasizing innovation, sustainability, and economic growth, the country hopes to strengthen its competitiveness alongside global producers like Canada, Uruguay, and South Africa.
