Island Breeze Farms, a two-acre cannabis greenhouse operation located across from the Polo Condos in Carpinteria Valley, is taking a fresh approach to odor control. The county Planning Commission has mandated that they revise their plans to include state-of-the-art air filters known as carbon “scrubbers.” Here’s the lowdown:
The Challenge of Cannabis Odor
Cannabis cultivation often comes with a distinctive smell that can impact nearby communities. Island Breeze Farms previously relied on a perfumed “misting” system to mask the pungent aroma emanating from their greenhouse roof vents. However, the commission recognizes that carbon scrubbers are the most effective solution.
Carbon Scrubbers: The Game Changer
Imported from the Netherlands and tested in the Santa Ynez Valley, carbon scrubbers have proven their worth. On average, they remove a remarkable 84 percent of the cannabis smell before it escapes into the outside air. These scrubbers are now becoming standard for responsible cannabis operations.
The Road Ahead
Island Breeze Farms will revise their odor control plans, embracing carbon scrubbers to enhance their environmental impact. As the cannabis industry evolves, it’s crucial to strike a balance between cultivation and community well-being.
