In a significant bust at Suvarnabhumi Airport, authorities apprehended three foreign nationals attempting to smuggle 89 kilograms of cannabis intended for European destinations, according to Thailand’s Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB).
Arrests and Details of the Operation
The arrests were part of an intensive crackdown operation conducted by the ONCB in collaboration with Thailand’s Customs Department and airport authorities. The first arrest took place on Friday, November 1, involving a Singaporean national found carrying 19 kilograms of cannabis buds concealed in his luggage. The suspect reportedly planned to transit through Singapore en route to Italy. He now faces charges related to attempting to smuggle controlled substances without proper declaration.
The following day, authorities detained two Malaysian nationals attempting to transport 70 kilograms of cannabis in four bags. These suspects, similarly, were scheduled to fly to Singapore and then connect to a flight bound for London. Both incidents highlight the ongoing efforts to intercept illicit drugs at Thai airports and the crucial role of cross-departmental coordination.
ONCB’s Efforts to Combat Trafficking
Pol Lt Gen Phanurat Lakboon, ONCB’s secretary-general, commended the airport and customs officials for their collaborative efforts in intercepting the drugs. He emphasized the agency’s ongoing commitment to curbing the movement of narcotics across Thailand’s borders and expressed gratitude for the operational success in apprehending the suspects.
Public Call for Support
The ONCB is encouraging the public to contribute to anti-narcotics efforts by reporting any suspicious activity that could aid in preventing drug trafficking. Information can be provided through the ONCB’s hotline at 1386, helping reinforce the agency’s network in suppressing drug-related activities.
