The Prairie Island Indian Community, located near Red Wing and less than an hour from downtown Minneapolis, celebrates the grand opening of Island Peži, a new cannabis dispensary. The name “Peži” comes from the Dakota word for grass, pronounced “PAY-zhee.” This dispensary, owned and operated by the Prairie Island Indian Community, marks a significant milestone as the closest dispensary to the Twin Cities since recreational cannabis use was legalized last year.
A Unique Opportunity
Island Peži’s location close to the Twin Cities and its adjacency to the casino at Treasure Island Resort & Casino are expected to drive profits. These profits will contribute to the tribal government, supporting essential services such as health care and education.
Community Involvement and Decision-Making
The tribe’s decision to enter the cannabis business was made through community outreach and consensus. Tribal members participated in the decision-making process, ensuring that diverse perspectives were considered. Island Peži now stands as a well-regulated business, providing safe access to cannabis products.
Island Peži represents a step forward in cannabis accessibility, offering a legal and well-regulated option for adult-use recreational cannabis in the region.
