Demecan’s €100 Million Round Was a Sales Bet

Trog Hawley priced Demecan close to €100 million for a sales platform, then German imports nearly tripled and public insurers dropped flower coverage.

Trog Hawley Capital of Florida led a 2024 round that put Demecan, a German medical cannabis producer, close to a €100 million ($109.24 million) value.

The raise was a high seven-digit sum, mostly equity with some debt, and the company said it would spend the money on its online sales platform and on operations.

Trog Hawley Priced a Grower and Funded a Shop

The Florida firm was the first U.S. institution to put money into Demecan. The company’s English-language site still bills a completed financing round and growth plan as a main step, not a footnote.

A person close to the deal put the price close to €100 million. The exact post-money figure was never published, and the cheque was described only as a high seven-digit number, mostly stock with a slice of debt.

Demecan had already raised €15 million in loans and equity in 2022. CB Insights now records a total funding of $24.82 million through a Series C-II round and names Trog Hawley Capital among the backers.

THE 2024 ROUND

  • The price: Close to €100 million ($109.24 million), according to a person familiar with the deal.
  • The cheque: A high seven-digit sum, mostly equity, with a debt slice.
  • The lead: Trog Hawley Capital of Florida, the first U.S. institution on the cap table.
  • The use: An online sales platform and operating upgrades, with no new farm announced beside the cheque.

Demecan was founded in 2017 and grows at a Saxony site near Dresden. Its wholesale arm works with cannabis producers abroad, so the same company that holds a German grow license also buys foreign flower for German pharmacies.

That mix is what a sales-platform cheque actually buys. A priced grower with a shop and an import book can take a ticket on every gram that moves, including grams it did not grow.

73 Tonnes Became 205 Tonnes in a Year

Adult possession became legal in Germany in April 2024. Medical flower did not wait for German rooms to catch the new demand. It came in through customs.

Red White & Bloom, which closed a European pharmacy-platform deal on 11 September 2026, said medical cannabis imports rose from about 73 tonnes in 2024 to about 205 tonnes in 2025. That is nearly triple the 2024 volume. The same release said Germany’s pharmacy channel for medical cannabis surpassed €1 billion in sales in 2025, citing industry data.

GERMAN MEDICAL CANNABIS BY THE TONNE

Year Imports cited Pharmacy mark
2024 about 73 tonnes April adult-possession law in force
2025 about 205 tonnes sales surpassed €1 billion

German indoor rooms were never sized for a 205-tonne year. The 2019 domestic tenders were written for a tight medical channel. The 2025 import tally is a wholesale market, and pharmacies filled it with foreign lots.

Cheap high-THC flower now sets the shelf price. Named German lots, including cheaper Demecan lines, get judged against that wall, and some scripts for a specific Demecan type still fail at the till when the jar is not in the drawer.

A U.S. cheque written against a German grow license therefore had to clear in a market where growing is no longer the scarce step. Selling, shipping and staying on the pharmacy screen is.

Aphria, Aurora and the 2019 Tender

Demecan’s license was once the whole story. Germany selected it in 2019 with Aphria and Aurora as the first domestic medical growers after a long tender, and that scarcity is what early backers paid for.

DEMECAN’S PATH TO THE U.S. CHEQUE

  1. 2017: Is founded as a German medical cannabis company.
  2. 2019: Is selected with Aphria and Aurora to grow medical cannabis in Germany.
  3. 2022: Raises €15 million in loans and equity.
  4. April 2024: Adult possession becomes legal under the new cannabis law.
  5. 2024: Trog Hawley Capital leads a round that prices the company close to €100 million.
  6. June 2026: Wins Saxony’s Scale-up of the Year founder prize.
  7. Late July 2026: Public insurers stop covering cannabis flowers after a savings statute hits the Federal Law Gazette.

After MedCanG, the medical-cannabis statute that accompanied the 2024 reform, Demecan became the first German company to hold a first German MedCanG cultivation license. The old three-name bottleneck did not survive that law.

The company now describes itself as one of the few German firms that grow, make and ship medical cannabis inside one chain, from the room to the pharmacy. The industry association BvCW lists it as the only German firm covering every manufacturing step from cultivation, processing and storage.

It also still buys. The wholesale desk works with producers worldwide to keep German pharmacies stocked. Vertical integration here includes an import book, not a closed German garden.

What the €100 Million Figure Left Out

The round’s published use of proceeds was not a second greenhouse. It was the shop window: an online sales platform and operating upgrades around it.

On the public site that platform sits next to a pharmacy finder for shops that turn Demecan extracts into capsules, and next to a promise of supply “from cultivation to the pharmacy.” The grow rooms in Saxony still matter as a quality claim and as a license. They are not the thing the new money was hired to fix.

A €100 million price on a privately held German grower is a distribution price once imports have nearly tripled. Whoever owns the patient file, the SKU on the pharmacy screen and the wholesale slot can take a cut of Canadian, Portuguese or other lots as easily as a cut of Ebersbach flower.

Trog Hawley did not have to win a German grow war to make that maths work. It had to back a licensed name that already sold into pharmacies and already traded with foreign producers. The 2024 cheque fitted that shape.

Public Insurers Stopped Paying for Flowers

The public-insurance savings law was published in the Federal Law Gazette at the end of July 2026 and took effect at once. Cannabis flowers dropped off the statutory list. That is the first hard cut in the medical channel since the 2024 opening, and it landed on the product pharmacies actually sold by the tonne.

Coverage did not vanish for every cannabis medicine. It narrowed to a short list of prepared products, and it left raw flower as a private bill.

WHAT PUBLIC INSURANCE STILL PAYS

  • Off the list: Cannabis flowers are no longer paid by statutory health insurers.
  • Still paid: Dronabinol, Nabilon and standardized extracts remain on the public path.
  • The alliance: In mid-August 2026 Demecan joined Cannamedical, Four 20 Pharma, Sanity Group, the VCA pharmacy group and Apotheke Lux99 in the “Versorgung sichern” push against the flower cutoff.

Self-pay medical cannabis, already the engine of the 2025 import spike, now carries even more of the flower trade. Doctors can still write blossoms. Insurers no longer have to settle the invoice.

For a company that raised money to improve an online sales platform, that split is not abstract. Public money, when it remains, will follow extracts. Private money will still follow flower, and it will follow it through shops and delivery desks rather than through a hospital cart.

Solvent-Free Extracts Lost the Insurance Argument

Demecan had already pushed extracts as a German-made answer to imported buds, including solvent-free live rosin sold into pharmacies. The telemedicine platform MedCanOneStop said on 25 June 2026 that Demecan FE 800 and other cannabis rosin extracts were not eligible for public payment from 24 June, because the solvent-free method does not match the European medicines standard used for the extracts insurers still recognise.

That is a nasty fit. The extract closest to inhaled flower is the one that falls outside the remaining public box. Standardized extracts keep the coverage. The blossom loses it. The live-rosin SKU sits in between and gets neither the old flower reimbursement nor the new extract stamp.

Pharmacy talk about cheaper Demecan lots tasting the same is the other half of that squeeze. In a 205-tonne import year, a German house brand has to win on reliability, on a doctor’s habit, or on a shop that makes reordering easy. Taste notes on a €5-per-gram import do not leave much room for a mid-shelf domestic flower to charge a patriotic premium.

The company still collects prizes for the factory. In June 2026 it won Saxony’s Scale-up of the Year founder prize, and the trade association put that win in the same note as a medical-cannabis market call.

On 29 July 2026 the International Cannabis Business Conference named Demecan an official sponsor and exhibitor for ICBC Berlin 2027. The factory is still on the road calendar. The 2024 cheque, though, was written for the till.

Trog Hawley’s round remains the last disclosed institutional check. German pharmacies now move more imported flower in a year than the entire 2024 total, and public insurers no longer pay for those blossoms. The shop the Florida money funded is the part of Demecan those two facts still leave standing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Other Investors Appear on Demecan’s Public Cap Table?

CB Insights names b2venture, Futury Capital, Mittelständische Beteiligungsgesellschaft Sachsen and Enexis among Demecan’s backers, plus five further investors it does not identify on the public profile. Trog Hawley Capital is listed first. The profile does not break out how much each holder put in, or whether the Florida round sat on top of the 2022 loan-and-equity mix or refinanced it.

How Did the July 2026 Insurance Law Treat Extracts?

After flowers left the statutory list, a course is supposed to start for at least six months on a finished medicinal product before other forms are considered. Homoeopathic and anthroposophic products lose even voluntary extra coverage from 1 January 2027. The remaining cannabis path is Dronabinol, Nabilon and standardized extracts, which is why a solvent-free rosin that misses the medicines-book method sits outside public payment even though it is an extract.

What Is the Demecan Patient ID Card?

Apple lists a Demecan Wallet app that stores a Demecan patient ID on a phone so the holder can show they are the rightful owner of Demecan products. It is a digital ID for a house brand, not a government cannabis card, and it only identifies Demecan goods rather than every pharmacy fill a patient might carry.

Where Does Demecan Grow and Sell in Germany?

CB Insights puts the headquarters at Moritzburger Weg 1, postcode 01561, in Saxony near Dresden. The company says it hires at three German locations and runs a pharmacy finder for shops that make capsules from its extracts, alongside wholesale into the wider pharmacy channel.

What Savings Target Did the 2026 Insurance Law Publish?

The statute is written to save €18.8 billion by 2027 and €38.1 billion by 2030 across the public system, not only in cannabis. Flower coverage was one cut among several. A 2.5 percent surcharge on some family-insured partners is scheduled from 2028, a separate household tax that does not change the pharmacy tariff for a gram of blossom.
